Today I'm analysing the situation of Theo.
Theo reached out about joining my Creative Career Level Up programme. He's spent several years at the same company, working through different roles, and by his own admission he's not totally miserable there. He's just stopped growing.
He's watched a few restructures come and go, each time hoping one might push him into more responsibility. It never quite happened, and somewhere along the way he realised he'd built a career that wasn't reflected in his job title or pay.
He knows he wants more, and he knows he's capable of more. But when it came to doing something about it, he'd been stuck in the same spot for months.
"I know I want more, I just don't know how to get it."
What's the challenge?
On paper, Theo's challenge is knowing what to apply for next. Underneath that: he's never really had to job hunt before, or work out what he's actually looking for.
It's not a lack of ambition. The unknown just feels bigger than the discomfort of staying, so he stays in the same place, even though its no longer serving him.
How can he move forward?
Theo's fear isn't really about leaving, it's about not knowing what he's walking towards. That kind of fear doesn't shrink with more thinking, it shrinks with clarity.
Once he gets specific about what he wants and has a plan for finding it, the unknown becomes a series of steps he can see and take, one at a time.
My advice
1. Get clear before you go looking
Theo's been trying to decide his next move without first deciding what he actually wants from it. Clarity has to come first, on the environment that brings out his best work and what he wants his days to feel like. Without it, every job looks equally vague and overwhelming.
2. Turn the unknown into a plan
Most of Theo's fear isn't the job hunt itself, it's not knowing what the process involves. With a clear, structured plan, what to target, how to pitch himself, how to get in front of the right people, the fear has nothing left to attach itself to.
3. Let the plan build the confidence, not the other way around
Theo's been waiting to feel ready before he starts. But confidence isn't the starting point, it's the result of a plan working. This is exactly what I needed to do to secure my role at Apple. I got clear, built a plan, and the fear disappeared step by step.
If Theo's story feels familiar - you're capable of more but have no idea how to actually go and get it - I'd love you to join me at my free webinar:
The 3-Step Process to Land a Job You'll Actually Love (the same one I used to land my job at Apple)
I'll walk you through how to get clear on what you want, build your plan, and take the fear out of the unknown.
