Creative Career Level Up

‘I’ve lost all momentum and don’t know where to begin’

Aug 29, 2025

Today I’m analysing the situation of Lulu. Lulu connected with me via a coaching session to discuss her lack of motivation for her job hunt.

Lulu’s situation is one I'm positive a lot of you are feeling right now. She’d just come back from a proper switch-off holiday and is feeling the weight of everything she’d put on pause. She’d taken a proper holiday. But being back made her realise how far she was from her new job.

She said she knew what she needed to do. She even had the Miracle Morning book open on her desk (my favourite book for getting motivation with any goal you set!).

But she felt overwhelmed. Unfocused. And like she couldn’t get started.

What’s the challenge?

Coming back from time off can be brutal. You’ve been relaxing, decompressing, not thinking about job titles and LinkedIn messages… and suddenly you’re staring down a to-do list that feels impossible.

Lulu’s mind was already skipping ahead:

  • I’ve got so much to do
  • I haven’t nailed down my plan yet
  • I’m falling behind

The truth is, she wasn’t behind. She just needed a reset.

How can she move forward?

Lulu didn’t need a brand-new strategy. She just needed to reconnect with the process.

We talked through the idea that action creates motivation - not the other way around. That just getting started, even with one small thing, would give her energy.

And we agreed that the next milestone wasn’t “land the job” or “rebuild the plan.”

It was simply:
✅ Get the process back in motion
✅ Find time each week to chip away at it
✅ Reach clarity through doing, not just thinking

My advice:

1. You don’t have to feel motivated to take action

There’s a huge myth that motivation comes first. It doesn’t. Action creates motivation. If you wait until you feel ready, you’ll never start. So pick one small thing - a 10-minute video, one outreach message, a single task - and begin. The rest will follow.

2. Make it easy to start

Set up micro-triggers. Put your laptop on the desk. Leave the Miracle Morning book out. Open the tab you need. For me, it’s earplugs and a blank Google Doc. Once the gear is in place, I can start. Once I start, I’m in. Motivation kicks in later.

3. Commit to the process, not the outcome

You don’t need to have your whole job hunt mapped out. You don’t need to fix everything in a week. Just block time for the process. Keep showing up. Lulu’s next milestone is working through her plan with me, not building it perfectly on her own.

4. Don’t do it alone - get a coach or mentor

Working with someone who can guide you, challenge you, and hold you accountable can make all the difference.

It’s like having a personal trainer. You could technically do it all yourself…but will you?

A coach helps you cut through the noise, stay focused, and keep moving forward - especially on the days when motivation is nowhere to be found.

Never underestimate the power of having someone in your corner. It can completely shift your momentum.

Remember, re-starting after a holiday is the hardest part. But once you get that momentum again, your next perfect role is just around the corner.

If you're feeling stuck like Lulu, you're not alone. And you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
