Your dream company isn't hiring. Pitch them anyway.

Oct 30, 2026

There's a company you'd love to work for. You know their campaigns inside out. Maybe you've even had a coffee with someone who works there.

But there's no role. Or there was one, and it disappeared.

So you set up a job alert and wait.

Why most people stay stuck waiting

Most people treat the job ad as the starting gun. No ad, nothing to do.

Others reach out, but send an email that says "I'm still here and I love what you do." Lovely, but it doesn't say anything a job application wouldn't.

And those who want to do something bigger often freeze. They worry about coming across as arrogant, or like they're telling a CEO how to run their business.

That's a fair worry. But there's a way to add real value without overstepping.

Give them something bigger than an email

In my programme, we call this the Big Tactic. Instead of another email, you send something that shows how you think.

It doesn't have to be a 20-page marketing plan (although that can work). A one-page document is often the sweet spot. Impactful, without taking you weeks.

How to build your one-sheet

Start with their business, not you

Don't lead with your background. Lead with their world. What's happening in their market? Who are they up against? What's changing?

Name the challenges and opportunities

Pick two or three things the business is facing. Keep them specific. This shows you've done your homework.

Show how you'd approach them

Set out what you'd do and why your experience makes you credible. If you like, map it into a simple 30-60-90 day plan at the end. But the thinking comes first. A generic 30-60-90 plan on its own won't land.

Share learnings, don't give orders

To avoid sounding like you're telling them how to do their job, share what you've learned rather than what they should do.

Say you ran a big campaign at a larger brand, targeting the same kind of customer this company is chasing. Along the way you discovered you'd accidentally alienated another group that turned out to really matter. That's a learning a smaller company would love to hear.

"We did something similar at X. Here's what we learned, in case it's useful."

That isn't arrogant. It's generous. It's free consulting from someone who's been there. And if they don't want it? No harm done.

Read the room

The Big Tactic isn't right for every situation. If the relationship is brand new, a warm email might be the better opener. You can always send your one-sheet as a second touchpoint.

But when you want to be remembered by a company that isn't hiring yet, show them how you think. That's what starts the conversation.
